Welcome to PadNap! As avid fans of the domestic architecture of the Bay Area and Northern California, we are often asked to recommend local vacation rentals in the area for like-minded enthusiasts. To that end we have created PadNap as a resource for the architectural tourists among us – because why not stay in a beautifully designed place when away from home?

To kick it off we have decided to feature a home that is undoubtedly familiar to many out there because it occupies a privileged place on the cover of Pierluigi Serraino’s rather dense but beautiful book, NorCalMod. The home was originally designed as a vacation rental by Joseph Francis McCarthy in 1949 and it remains available for its intended purpose today – a beautiful jewel box of a beach house that hovers lightly above the sand.
